Bugger!.....
Sometimes I think that if I had a duck it would drown
I've spent the last few weeks doing a heap of little maintenace jobs on the trusty Pantah.
I've had her 23 years and, apart from a wee bingle that left me with fractured C2 & C3, things have been pretty smooth.
I managed to get a set of headers for her last week at a good price (new old stock), which I considered a major find for a 25 year old bike.
So.... all put back together... time for photos and a ride.
Magic
Took a ride along my favorite roads and called in on a mate to show off the new pipes.
Off home.... and I drop the damn thing
My fault.
I believed the truck driver when he indicated that he was turning left into the road I was coming out of.
He lied
I was pretty well commited and needed to brake HARD to avoid slamming into the side of him.
Even though I was travelling below the speed limit (about 70kph) there just wasn't enough room.
Front wheel locked (stupid mistake ), I hit the ground like a sack of spuds and followed the bike sliding on it's left side towards the truck.
I stopped just before the bike... which missed the truck by inches as it slid past the rear wheels.
The truck drove on and I scrambled to kill the engine.
Couldn't pick up the bike because I had dislocated my collar bone (managed to get it back and ride home ).
Basically I let myself down.
I did see him indicating, but I didn't see him START indicating... so he could have had the lights flashing for miles.
I just wasn't careful enough
Soooo...
Good news, the new headers didn't get scratched.
Bad news, the Staintune exhaust got scratched and dented (nope... they don't make them anymore).
Fairing, major scratches and broken in 2 places.
Tank, dented where left switchblock was pushed into it.
Centre stand, bent (hence dent in exhaust).
Left front indicator broken (damn near impossible to find replacements).
Other minor scrapes... clutch lever, gearchange, front axle nut
Me....
Banged up knee and very sore in the left shoulder area.
It pays to wear the right gear, else I'm pretty sure I'd have busted something.
Woke up this morning to considerable pain... so nope it wasn't a bad dream
It's going to be a long time before I can get all that fixed.
I'm trying to stay out of the shed.... can't bear to look at what I've done
Cop ya later

If you aren't living on the edge you are taking up too much room.
Bugger.... Did you get his number and were there any witnesses? I don't know how it works in Oz, but over here you *may* be able to claim off his insurance as it was due to his error (leaving his indicator on) that caused you to take evasive action!
Indicators are there for a reason, and if we weren't supposed to believe them there would be no point in having them - we'd just have to sit at a junction and wait until the road was completely clear before pulling out....

Yikes! Glad you're still in one piece, though.
I've had that nearly happen so often in the car (I'm new to bikes) that I just wait to see if there's some evidence they are really going to turn (slowing down and actually turning the wheels is what I'm looking for)! I don't care how frustrated people behind me get, it's my life and my bike!
Keep yer pecker up; you never know what'll turn up in the small ads. You'll have the 'Pants' back on the road soon enough

Get on with it before you die (or the law catches up with you)...

Yup, that's the attitude I've always taken, can't trust the buggers.....
But... well I guess I f*cked this time
I had been having a great ride, nothing frantic just a nice relaxing outting around some of my favorite roads
All was good with the world... then.....pffftttt....
Oh... and you can add a broken rib to that injury list too.... lovely
Bloody good thing I was wearing the right gear.
I'm thinking that this may be the start of the restoration of the old bike.
Not too drastic a job, just engine out of the frame... remove the wiring and freshen everything up..... maybe.
Otherwise I'll just fix her up and ride.... no other bike feels quite like my old duke
Thanks for the get wells
I'm a crap patient so I'm not letting this slow me down

There's a good Ducati forum here in the U.K.
www.ducatisti.co.uk
There's a few from Australia on there , may be help locating new part's ...
I've signed up
I love my Raptor, but have had a 23 year love affair with my pretty little Pantah.
I got a major bollocking from my mates when I bought her, heaps of jokes about not waiting for me when it breaks down.
But she never did... ever
170,000km without a rebuild and she still starts first time everytime.
60 oil changes, the same number of oil filters, a LOT of tyres, quite a few chains & sprockets, many hours balancing bloody Dellorto carbs and she can still make my jeans tight
Ahhhh well... even more reason to be in the shed instead of doing housework
Cheers

well mate i know how you feel i came of my pantha as well i came off pretty hard on a corner covered in gravel i completely busted my shoulder and broke 3 ribs the bike was in better condition than i was only a broken clutch leaver and a crack in the fairing, but i had to sell her
every corner tells a story

Staintune offer a re-skinning service - shouldn't matter that they don't make them anymore they should be able to rewrap it and buff it up.Runs With Scissors wrote:

...snip
Sorry to hear it btw

X-Raptor #202. PCII, CF Bellypan, blinker pods and front guard, Staintunes and a Ti Clevis pin because saving 15grams REALLY IS worth an extra 20 quid
