Leaking?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone knows what this stain might be from, it is a kind of gold colour, so unsure if it might have been caused by fuel, or coolant maybe?

You have front sprocket and chain behind there so could be chain lube?
Also the clutch pushrod come out just behind that little cover that’s stained so if the o ring is leaking it could be engine oil?
Take both covers off and see where things look a bit wet and trace from there.
You will have to clean the hunk away a bit but you can run it with covers off to see where the fluid is coming from?

It might be historical I think, as I rode it 450 k's home and didn't notice anything leaking, nor do I see any stains on our porch yet.

Hard to tell in the pic, but it comes from higher up in the shadowy part, so I would not suspect chain gunge.

Still, good to know those covers come off, I will remove them and see if I can clean it all up, then see what happens.

That looks very like fuel staining to me, being that tan colour and not obviously sticky since there isn't much dirt associated with it. I wonder if the pipe from the tank overfilling overflow is caught up behind there rather than discharging to the road?

Had a closer look with the seat off today, I think it is fuel. Is this bandage stuff on the tank maybe a dodgy repair? The bandage is damp, as is the fuel tank hinge, but it doesn't seem to travel any further.

Looks like a dodgy fix attempt to me, fibreglass mesh.

Why would it be leaking there though, these tanks are plastic I thought, maybe cracked?

Here are some pics, I wonder if anybody does proper repairs to plastic tanks? I expect there is zero chance of finding another one anywhere.

does anybody know the fuel hose size, is it 6mm? Going to buy a dry break coupler so I can remove the tank.

It had one fitted as standard...

The fuel pump seal to the tank is a tricky thing to get right also. It doesn't need a great deal of torque, summat really silly like 3/5 ft/lbs, and must be bolted in the correct order. A new gasket is a must & I used to blue Hylomar to make doubly sure.

Really? do you need to lift the tank to see it? I couldn't see anything just looking with the seat off.

I've just popped out to check on mine and you shouldn't need to lift the tank to see it.

With the seat removed and looking from the rhs the large tube with a coiled plastic protection layer is the main supply and this has one of those fancy connection where it meets the metal tube going to the fuel pump base plate.

There is another metal tube in the base plate without a fancy connector sand this is, I think, the drain return from the 'carbs/FI'.

Both tubes and connections can also be seen from the lhs.

Yes - it's the square connector of the lhs pipe.

Well first you'll have much better access if you unbolt the tank at the front, hinge it backwards & some how support it. I bolt a bar between the tank bolt holes and use a mini strap from the rear subframe to keep it in place.

Don't quote me here, but from what I recall you pinch the white tabs in the connector to release. There's another one farther up the run nearer the 'carbs/fi'
