Gday From South Aus

Post by turbomart »

Hi all.Recently acquired a 01 650 raptor which has full staintune exhaust , led tailight & indicators.
Must say I love the looks, the torquey V-twin ,the sound ,the light weight & flick-ability.
Rated horsepower is down on my other current bike (95 Yamaha YZF600R) but in most situations it feels stronger due to broader mid range torque.
Not so impressed with stock suspension especially front so pulled it apart & repaired bad previous "fix".Will post findings in tech section.
Cheers !

G'day Bruce! (strange you're not called Bruce...never mind.)
Been off the site for a while and noticed the thread from Oz. Hope you continue to like the Raptor...they really are good. The suspension isn't too bad if you have Marzocchi 43mm's. The factory weren't too good at putting the right amount of oil in...or getting the preload right. The botch might not have been by the previous owner. Set them up as in their own literature and they're not too bad. For preload put a tie-wrap round one leg. you should get about 25mm unused fork travel on most rides...but I may be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs. I have the recommended settings somewhere as a starting point if you need them.
Enjoy your ride and I won't mention the ashes!

Hairy Mark here again,
If you feel the front's a bit vague, try dropping the yokes through the forks a touch to load up the front. I dropped mine by 8mmm and it feels more responsive. By which I mean the forks stick up out of the top yoke 8mm more than they used to.

Cheers.

Im only about 10 min from the Adelaide hills & there are some great stretches of road there but many of em are ruined by some pretty rough bitumen.Thats why I have to sort suspension as mid corner bumps can be pretty nasty at times.
I would like to say ,since my first go at the front forks ,they are much better but I will be changing to even lighter 2.5W oil shortly & ill see how that goes.
Once Ive fixed the front Ill be on the hunt for a replacement rear maybe a old fireblade one as it looks like it might be an easy swap with some mods.

You say that like you think we really give a flying f....

Has no one told you that the only reason why we in Britain love talking about it, is because we know it hurts you to lose. It's just like an older brother, winding up an insecure younger sibling? :nerner:
