Steering Head Bearings

This is starting to annoy me.....!!!!!

I waited 3 weeks for the OEM site to deliver my bag'o'bits, the front wheel bearings went on just fine. I decided to replace the steering bearings as well, been playing with it tonight. Got the old ones off no problem but the EXPENSIVE OEM ones don't fit.

According to what I took off they should be a pair of L44643 bearings, also known as L44610. They sent me L44640 instead, obviously the order picker mistook "10" for "40" on the end of the code. Inside diameter is 1.5mm different so there's no chance of getting them on.

Obviously I couldn't tell until the job was so far advanced, now I've got a bike in pieces, balanced precariously on a trolley jack for the next few weeks till I sort it out.

Anyone got any new bearings for sale, know a good site to buy them from or any advice at all please!!!???

Have you tried Simply Bearings? 01942 269837 or 0845 678 3336

I'll check my stash just in case

ebay about £34 i think , im replacing mine once the paint is done

you must have a local bearing supplier just quote the no. or take along your old ones if you get stuck i could get them for you and post to you

yeah mate, go to your local hardware/bearing shop! they have everything in stock. Every little town should have a bearing shop. In my little farmers' town there's three of them

Even if you don't have the part number, they will measure your old bearing, and give you the exact new one.

i never ever buy bearings from motorcycle manufacturers, they charge double or triple for the same item.

Can anyone confirm that is the serial number (L44643/L44610 or L44600LA (sealed)) of the required bearing for all the Raptors? I need to order in some for a mechanic who is working on my bike out of hours.

Have any of you successfully ordered from OnlineBearings.co.uk? http://www.onlinebearings.co.uk/l44600l ... 16201.html They seem to have them at a very reasonable price.

Hello, ref. the bearings I finally got it sorted - by taking the advice above and contacting a small farm nearby who had them all..!

The steering head bearings are L44643 and the cup is L44610 (think that's the right way around). I ended up leaving the cups in the frame and only changing the bearings.

They are not sealed, only the wheel bearings come sealed so just get unsealed ones. I paid about £7.50 each as a guide. Those sizes sound right to me.

Thanks for the reply. He got back to me earlier today after he removed them and gave me the same bearing number so ordered some of the sealed ones from the Online Bearings mob. We'll see how they go. I just assumed that head bearings would be sealed to limit water ingress, but I have never had to do them before. The sealed ones have the same outer diameter I believe so should fit exactly the same as the standard ones hopefully. Otherwise I am going to have a long wait for bike to come back!

From your link the picture shows sealed with an extra rubber ring around the bearing. Given where they go sealed is a very good idea if they fit! I just put on un-sealed as that's what came off and I just wanted it to go together asap after the trouble the OEM site game me

They delivered really quickly and its now sorted so sealed seems fine.

So if i order 2 x L44643 Bearings and 2 x L44610 Cups, that would do my steering head bearings in my 2004 Raptor 1000? Mine are truely shagged as the steering "notches" back into centre.

Rekon it would take under 2 hours with reasonable knowledge..? Any specialised tools required?

It's an old thread, but i'm just interested in bearings. Explain the situation and the incorrect parts you received. They should be able to expedite the correct L44643 bearings to you. Ask about a return label for the L44640 bearings they sent by mistake. Once fix this, you can get some more bearings stores for choosing.
